FALCONER - To show its appreciation to the Falconer Public Library for a housing a receptacle for used and unwanted eyeglasses, the Falconer Lions Club recently made an important donation to the library.
Since 1951, the Falconer Lions Club has been dedicated to helping those in the community who are blind and sight impaired improve the quality of their lives.
As part of a generous donation that also helps to serve the aforementioned purpose, the Falconer Lions Club has donated several large print magnifier sheets, a large print Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary and the large print Webster's New Explorer Dictionary to the Falconer Public Library.
"I believe it is paramount that a library has a good rapport with its community," said Sue Seamans, library director. "In this particular case, the Falconer Lions Club reaches out to our library on a regular basis to have the depository of the used glasses and sunglasses that they then take, grind the lenses and send them to different parts of the world. That's something that the library has done for the past 40 years. Yet, on the other part, the (Lions Club) has always been concerned with the visually impaired.
"They were one of the first agencies, even before the blind association, that worked with us to promote large-print books," Seamans continued. "As a consequence we have a really good collection of large print books. But additionally, the Lions Club will work with us on things such as newspapers. Now we have the magnifying sheets, so people who are vision impaired can use the magnifying sheets to read the newspaper or a magazine. (This donation) is such a nice, genuine offer on their part, since their budget is so constrained. We are genuinely grateful."
Hours for the Falconer Library are as follows: Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sunday closed.
