CHERRY CREEK - A new event has been added to the 2012 Independence Day Celebration to be held in Cherry Creek on Saturday - a pie-baking contest.
The contest will be part of Saturday's schedule of events, with all pie entries due by noon at the ball park. Entrants may enter as many pies as they like, but each pie will be allowed to win one time only.
Participants may choose from five categories: apple, blueberry, cherry, peach and miscellaneous. No cream or custard pie will be allowed. Entries must be homemade.
Two prizes per category will be awarded: most beautiful presentation and best overall taste. There will also be a $50 cash prize awarded.
All pies become the property of the Cherry Creek Community Association and will be sold by the slice after the judging is completed, with all proceeds going toward the new playground, which is planned to be built this summer.
Entrants are asked to place a label on each pie pan with the entrant's name and phone number. Pie pans will be returned if requested.
The pie baking contest is sponsored by the Cherry Creek Community Association. Private contributions have made the contest possible.
