Bettie Tompsett was born Naoma Elisabeth Butcher in Arkwright, Chautauqua County, on June 12, 1912. She grew up in Grand Valley, Pa. After graduation from Pleasantville High School, she attended Edinboro State Teacher's College. After graduating and teaching in Pennsylvania, she attended Fredonia Normal College. Following graduation, she married Wayne Tompsett on June 22, 1938. She lived on their farm on Terry Road, Sinclairville, from then until moving to the Bergquist Memorial Building at Heritage Village on Oct. 16, 2010. She taught in one-room school houses and in the Cassadaga Valley Central School system before retiring in 1970. She and her husband raised two children: Nancy Tompsett Goad, a family nurse practitioner, and James Tompsett, a veterinarian. She has seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, with more coming soon. She is a Christian and says she is at peace.
