Drawing The Line Between Church And State

June 21, 2012
The Post-Journal

The Fortnight to Freedom protest is being organized by Roman Catholic Church officials and members. But it is about more than Catholicism and more than religion of any variety.

It is about liberty, the very foundation of what it means to be an American.

Appropriately, Fortnight to Freedom events are to culminate on Independence Day. They involve various activities to educate people about the government's assault on freedom through the new national health care law, and to protest that infringement on our constitutional right to live as our religious faiths dictate.

If you believe the controversial aspect of the law in question is about access to contraception or a woman's right to choose, you should learn more about the issue. It is solely about whether government has the power to, in effect, order a church and its members to disobey a basic tenet of their faith.

From time to time, government needs to be reminded it exists solely through the consent of we, the people.

This is one of those times.
