Paramedics’ Quick Action Save DUI Crash Victim

June 20, 2012
By Ryan Atkins (ratkins@ post-journal.com) , The Post-Journal

A man was involved in an apparent DUI crash on Sunday night in Sugar Grove.

The crash occurred as Gary L. O'Donnell, 59, of Sugar Grove, Pa., was traveling south on State Route 69 at an apparent high rate of speed. As he attempted to negotiate a left curve, his vehicle left the west edge of the roadway where he then overcorrected to the left, losing control. The vehicle then left the west edge of the road traveling over an embankment and striking a tree which caused the vehicle to become airborne and roll approximately 1 times before coming to rest on its roof.

EmergyCare paramedics were traveling behind O'Donnell at the time of the crash and used immediate action to extricate him from the vehicle, ultimately saving his life. They then transported him to a location where he was airlifted by STAT Medevac to Hamot Medical Center for further treatment.

Alcohol and a high rate of speed are being considered as factors in the cause of the crash. Investigation is ongoing and DUI and several traffic violations are pending.

EmergyCare and STAT Medevac were assisted at the scene by Youngsville Volunteer Fire Department, Lander Volunteer Fire Department and Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
