Nina Karbacka, Jamestown Public Schools orchestra and Suzuki teacher, was honored Wednesday at the 36th annual Jamestown Suzuki Strings Celebration and Scholarship Concert for her 40 years of service to the district. Mrs. Karbacka, who is retiring this year, was surprised by city councilman Ward-2 Tony Dolce, representing the mayor of Jamestown, who named Friday "Nina Karbacka Day" for her exemplary service to the district and the children of Jamestown. Mrs. Karbacka was also presented a portrait from the district by Jamestown Board of Education President Christine Schnars, which will hang in the Jamestown Public Schools administration offices. Students performed their last Suzuki concert with Mrs. Karbacka with perennial favorites like "Lightly Row" and "Go Tell Aunt Rhody." For the grand finale, current Suzuki students were joined by guest alumni to play "Twinkle, Twinkle" to the delight of the large crowd in attendance. "I am overwhelmed by all the honors. It has been my joy to work with the students of JPS for the past 40 years and I want to express my thanks to the administration, staff, parents and students of JPS," said Mrs. Karbacka. Guest artist for the concert was Margaret Williams, an eighth-grade honor student from Washington Middle School. She has been studying violin with Mrs. Karbacka since kindergarten at Love School. Two Edward and Marie Russo Memorial Suzuki Scholarships were also presented to students Connie Rushforth and Christina Peppy.
