The Westfield/Mayville Rotary Club recently sponsored area students in a SLAPSHOT program held in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada.

SLAPSHOT stands for Student Leadership Award Program for Students High on Training and is organized by Rotary District 7090. It is designed to promote, honor, celebrate and nurture young leaders who are high school students ages 15 to 18.

The weekend agenda was focused on maximizing the promotion of leadership, self-esteem and teamwork. It offers the opportunity for 100 high school students in the district to come together for a unique experience. The program is founded on Rotary ideals and serves as a strong link on the continuum of Rotary's youth leadership development opportunities, which include Youth Exchange, RYLS, Early Act, Interact and Rotaract.

This year's SLAPSHOT students who visited Rotary recently, invited by Dan Smith, New Generations chair, were Mary Schmitz, Chautauqua Lake Central School, and Kimberly Pacy and Jordan Boland of Sherman Central School. They told of their experience and how much they enjoyed the weekend. Also on the SLAPSTICK trip was Ashley Lancaster of Westfield Academy and Central School who couldn't attend the Rotary meeting because of illness.

The workshop sessions and topics covered during the weekend included interpersonal skill development, teenage issues and concerns and development of personal solutions for dealing with these issues.

Smith also named the area students who attended last year: Zachary D. Mota, Ripley Central School; Meghan M. Roberts and Abbigale Deland, Brocton Central School; Markus A. Jonek, Westfield Academy and Central School; and Luke Smith, Chautauqua Lake Central School.

"The SLAPSHOT program was highly successful in its attainment of the stated goals and will be continued annually," Smith said.
