To the Readers' Forum:
On May 20, the Viking Mixed Chorus performed their 66th annual spring concert in the First Lutheran Church. There were patriotic songs including the ''Star Spangled Banner,'' ''Battle Hymn of the Republic'' and the ''Swedish National Anthem.'' Kathy Durnell greeted us with ''Getting To Know You.'' the audience was involved in singing four lively sing-a-long songs. We were treated to a flute and banjo, played by Paul Sandstrom. Amy Stenta and Kathy Durnell sang a cute duet. Rose Sandstrom sang ''Over the Rainbow.'' Several songs were sung in Swedish with amazing ease.
Mary Schmidt debuted as chorus director. Her expressive hands led the singers expertly. Her husband, Andy Schmidt, joined Phyllis Lindahl on the piano, taking turns with the accompaniment. The men and ladies chorus kept up with a variety of tempos and lyrics and a great joy filled the hall.
Once again we had the pleasure or hearing the Viking Chorus handling a challenging program of international songs and excellent direction.
