Nelson Drives Home Winning Run For Lady Thunderbirds

MAYVILLE - Westfield edged Chautauqua Lake, 10-9, in eight innings in Division 2 softball on Wednesday as Hillary Nelson recorded the winning hit for the Lady Wolverines.

Morgan Shepard tripled with one out in the eighth and then Nelson singled her home.

Winning pitcher Kristyn LeBarron put the Lady Thunderbirds down in order in the bottom of the eighth to nail down the victory.

Top hitters for Westfield, was Shepard with two singles and a triple while recording two hits apiece were Kathryn Catalano, Nelson, and Rachel Allen.

Kris Merritt pitched the complete game for the Lady Thunderbirds and fanned 11 and allowed one walk. Lauren Cummings had a double, two singles, a sacrifice fly and drove in three runs.

CRANDALL LEADS C-LV

CATTARAUGUS - Sara Crandall was a tower of strength on the mound once again for Cattaraugus-Little Valley.

Crandall permitted just one hit over five innings, striking out nine and walking none when C-LV (5-2, 11-2) blanked winless Salamanca, 17-0, in a game called because of the 10-run rule.

The only hit allowed by Crandall was a third inning two-out single by Kati Smith.

Emily Fuller knocked in three runs with a two-run double and a RBI single and Sammy Gross added two singles in the win. Olivia Ploetz slammed an RBI triple for the winners, who were aided with 15 walks.

PORTVILLE TOPS CARDS

RANDOLPH - Shauna Sprout had four hits, including two doubles and a triple, Albanie Stives hit two triples and a double and the Portville Lady Panthers (5-3) cruised by Randolph, 19-5.

Along with Sprout and Stives, who was also the winning pitcher after striking out three and walking two over seven innings, Kayla Welty had two hits and a double.

For Randolph, Ashley Mendell had four hits and Kaylee Luce three.

The Lady Cardinals (4-7, 3-5) travel to Cassadaga Valley today.
