To the Readers' Forum:
I could not have been more pleased by the article highlighting the LGBT couples in our community and abroad finally able to tie the knot. What I was, however, appalled by was the several blatantly homophobic responses expressed recently in the Readers' Forum.
One might be inclined to call someone who says such hateful things "despicable" but that would not be a very kind thing to do.
I can't believe how prevalent that sort of backward thinking has been in the last few days. Likening increased tourism of gay couples to the AIDs outbreak is obviously a ridiculous ploy to make a sensational comparison.
At a time when the economy in the country and our community is somewhat tenuous it is one thing for you to personally discriminate against gay patrons based on your prejudices and misguided beliefs. It is another entirely to implore others to do the same to the detriment of the community at large.
In conclusion I would suggest to anyone who is concerned about the morals in this country that they take a closer look at themselves and what they can do to be a better person, like not spewing hateful comments and possibly getting a dictionary.
