MAYVILLE - Brad Johnson went all the way as Brocton made a successful start to the baseball season on Thursday afternoon.
Johnson retired the last three batters with the tying run on second base in the last of the seventh inning to preserve the Bulldogs' 4-3 verdict over Chautauqua Lake (2-1) in Division 3 action.
Johnson fanned six and walked seven while allowing seven hits in the route-going performance in the win.
Kyle Maher led off the seventh inning with his third single and stole second base for Chautauqua Lake. Then Johnson bore down and retired the next three batters.
Devon Austin hit a two-run, two-out single in the first inning and Cody Merrill had a two-run single in the fourth for the winners.
Laurie Scott had the other hit for Brocton against the 10-strikeout pitching of Maher and Jason McMahon.
Ian Clute singled home two runs in the fifth and Nate Gleason had an RBI single in the sixth for Chautauqua Lake in a game that started with the temperature at 42 degrees and it was 36 at the end.
