POLAND - One person was killed and another critically injured in an accident at 11:46 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Hartson and Stone roads in Poland.
According to police, Candice Workman, 36, of Falconer was killed in the accident and Joseph L. Martin, 41, of Falconer was injured and is listed in critical condition.
Police say a 2001 Mazda, driven by Workman, was being driven west on Hartson Road with Martin as a front-seat passenger.
The vehicle didn't stop at the intersection of Stone Road. According to police, Workman applied the brakes as she passed through the "T" intersection but was unable to stop the vehicle. The vehicle went off the road, over a bank, hit a large tree head-on and came to rest in Cassadaga Creek.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene along with deputies and members of the Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team.
"It was feared that the vehicle was submerged in the creek, but it wasn't and the WET team stood down," said Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace.
Martin was taken out of the vehicle and taken to WCA Hospital for treatment. He was then taken to Hamot Medical Center in Erie. He is listed in critical condition as of Tuesday, Gerace said.
Workman was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident is still under investigation.
The Ellicott Police Department, Kennedy Fire and Rescue, Falconer Rescue, Alstar Ambulance and the county coroner assisted on the scene.
