Rivers Was Poor Choice For Lucy Fest

August 28, 2011
By Ellen Waterway , The Post-Journal

This year's Lucy Fest was received with mixed feelings from your fans from Michigan. My friend, Mary, and myself have been faithfully attending the festivals for over 10 years and this year's 100th birthday celebration was something we looked forward to with much excitement.

We fell in love your wonderful city on our very first Lucy Festival back in 2000. I had accidently lost my car's keys and the town of Jamestown helped me in ways too numerous to mention. From the policeman who took us under his wing, to all the townsfolk who gave us assistance was totally unbelievable! It was six months later that I received an envelope in the mail with the long-lost keys inside and a note explaining how and where they were found was totally mind-boggling. Everyone was so helpful that we fell in love with the town instantly.

Every year since then has been a wonderful experience for both me and my friend Mary until this year.

We've been anticipating Lucy's 100th birthday celebration for a year and were really looking forward to having a great time with all our Lucy friends and being able to participate in the Guiness Book of World Records.

We weren't let down with all the people that came to celebrate with us. Many of the friends that we've made were there along with many of the Jamestown people who have become our dear friends over the past several years. Excitement was mounting and we were planning on having a great time sharing our "Lucy" stories with one another.

Weren't we surprised when we went to the Reg and took our seats for the Joan Rivers show. How could this wonderful town have such a crude and crass "comedian" perform at the Lucy Fest? It wasn't any surprise that we walked out of her "show" 10 minutes after she uttered her 20th (or more) vulgar words to a packed house of Lucy fans.

I understand that it was adult comedy but ... at a Lucy Festival? Come on you can do better than that can't you? That's not comedy - that's trash. I understand that the majority of stars that were involved with Lucy are deceased or too old to attend but Joan Rivers? Why bother even having it called a Lucy Celebration when that woman had nothing but garbage coming out of her mouth?

Who ever got that woman on the docket should have their head examined and then fired from their job! If you want a trashy comedian in Jamestown you can have one on any other weekend but not on one where we as Lucy fans want Lucy humor, not trash and garbage spewing out of someone's mouth every 15 seconds.

We would love a refund of the money we wasted on the show but we learned a lesson - one that we will never repeat again Actually it should never happen again.

Show some videos of past Lucy festivals to the fans - it would be a lot cheaper and all ages would be able to attend and enjoy a clean comedy show that Lucy herself would probably promote!
