Cut Dependence On Foreign Oil

August 23, 2011
The Post-Journal

To the Readers' Forum:

The national average price of gasoline has reached the $4 per gallon mark. I know my family is much more careful about where and when we take the car out. We are much more concerned with how much gasoline we are using and my neighbors are, too.

Conserving fuel is a good thing for many reasons, most importantly for the environment, but being forced to change our driving habits because of our growing dependence on OPEC oil, is not.

In April alone, we spent $42.5 billion on foreign oil and subsidized terrorism in the process. The NAT GAS Act will make America safer. We can't continue to hold ourselves hostage to foreign oil.

During the next congressional recess, I hope everyone will try to attend one of the town hall meetings for their member of Congress to encourage them to be a leader in Congress who is helping to reduce what may be a half trillion dollar transfer of wealth from the United States to countries like Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela and Angola. These are not nations on whom we should be basing our national energy future and the NAT GAS Act will help reverse that dangerous trend. Please help get the NAT GAS Act to the floor for a vote so the Senate will take it up, and the president will sign it into law.
