Helen Miller, a 17-year member of Cattaraugus County's Retired Senior Volunteer Program was named volunteer of the year before about 400 attendees of the 38th annual Older American gala held recently in Olean.
Mrs. Miller accumulated more than 4,400 volunteer hours at the Portville Senior Wellness and Nutrition (SWAN) program, Meals on Wheels, and the Cattaraugus County Health Department.
In 2010, 674 active RSVP members contributed 65,818 hours in Cattaraugus County at more than 38 non-profit organizations. According to the Washington-based Independent Sector National Volunteer Organization, the contribution made by these seniors is valued at $1,788,275.

There were 200 volunteers with between 100 and 500 hours of volunteer service in 2010. Additionally, the following were honored for their service in 2010:
Those with more than 500 hours were: Robert Clendenen, Shirley Moss, Robert Olivett, Anna Scacci, Betty Wesley, Carl Finley, Charlene Granger, John Styles, Dorothy Knight. Those with more than 600 hours were: Maureen Curry and Robert Goodrich. Martha Osterstruck had more than 800 hours, and Lois McLaughlin was recognized for more than 1,300 hours of volunteer time.
