Two Options For Beginning Readiness

February 27, 2011
The Post-Journal

At the Catholic Academy of the Holy Family students are welcomed to become a member of our student body at any grade level and any time during the school year.

For those who begin in preschool we accept students at the Pre-K level who are three years old and potty-trained.

At preschool, a student has two options. Our traditional pre-K class offers a wide variety of hands on learning geared toward kindergarten readiness in academics and socialization. The students participate in special subjects during the week including three physical education classes, art, two music classes and library class. The program can be half or full days and can be three, four or five days per week.

In the Montessori Pre-K class the philosophy of Maria Montessori is followed - ''follow the child.'' The teachers allow the students to lead the direction of the learning within guidelines of the philosophy. Many of the materials used in class are ''self-correcting,'' allowing the student to correct errors and learn from the corrections. The Montessori classes also have music and religion weekly and include physical education, art and foreign language as part of their curriculum.

Both philosophies of education are valuable to the student and parents can visit both classrooms before making a decision for their child. The Montessori style of education currently continues through third grade and the traditional program continues through eighth grade.
