Community Helpers

K-9 Unit Comes To Kindergarten Classroom

February 27, 2011
Post-Journal

Mrs. Sirianni's kindergarten class worked on a unit about neighborhoods, jobs and community helpers. A visit by Officers Segrue and Cresanti started the unit. The officers told the children about their jobs. Garo, the police dog, accompanied them. They learned about the jobs that Garo does. A special show-and-tell was assigned. With their parents each child was asked to prepare three sentences and draw a picture about their homes and neighborhoods. The class talked about all the different places in the neighborhoods and all the jobs that people do. They discussed how people make money and what they needed to buy with their money as compared to their wants. Prayer for all community helpers is always observed here at Holy Family. For the classroom creative play area the children had access to appointment slips and travel agency forms. In the future a class store will be set up in which students may purchase items within a given budget. In conclusion a class book was written with children drawing their future profession. Some aspiring doctors, police officers, fashion designers and hair stylists will be coming from Holy Family in the coming years.
