Fredonia falls to Olean, 3-2, in Division 1 match

Ashley Szalkowski took the second singles match Thursday and teammate Lauren Woloszyn the third singles match, but that was not enough for the Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (2-5) as they fell to the Olean Lady Huskies (5-2) in CCAA Division 1 girls’ tennis action. Szalkowski dropped Jocelyn Eade, 7-6, 6-4 while Woloszyn needed three sets to get past Kylie O’Connell, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3. Baylee Tarnowski fell to Olean’s Bethany Chesbro, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 in first singles while teammates Lauren Millson and Marina Kessler lost to the Lady Huskey tandem of Lauren Querens and Marissa Levia, 6-2, 6-3, in first doubles action. “This was a better showing for us,” Fredonia head coach Mike Hirschbeck said. “The kids played much better. Ashley and Lauren played much better and Baylee improved her play at first singles.” In second doubles, Olean’s Shawna Taylor and Laura Anderson downed Sarah Zinni and Erin Yelich, 6-3, 6-4.
