NILES - The Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League continued to pitch well on Friday night against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, but unfortunately for the Jammers, the bats were held in check for the second-straight game.
The Scrappers broke a 1-1 tie with a solo home run off the bat of Chase Burnette in the sixth inning and the 2-1 advantage held up, giving Mahoning Valley its second-straight win against Jamestown and its fourth in five games this season.
While the Jammers (8-7) are 1-4 against the Scrappers this season, they are 7-3 against the rest of the league, which is good enough for a first-place tie in the standings with Mahoning Valley in the Pinckney Division.
The Jammers got on the board first in the top of the second on a solo home run off the bat of second-year player Sequoyah Stonecipher. Unfortunately for Jamestown, it was the last extra base hit and the only run it would score the rest of the game.
Mahoning Valley came right back in the bottom of the second to tie the game on an RBI double from Andrew Kinney. The score remained 1-1 through five innings as both starters settled in.
For Jamestown, Holden Sprague got the start and pitched into the sixth inning before giving up the mistake to Burnette. After the homer, Sprague was lifted from the game with a final line of 5 innings, two earned runs allowed, only three hits and one strikeout. For the Scrappers, Jordan Cooper earned his first win of the year going a full six innings, giving up just four hits and striking out four batters.
The Jammers threatened in the ninth inning with runners on first and second with two outs, but Stonecipher grounded out to end the game.
Jamestown's bullpen pitched lights out in relief of Sprague with Isaac Morales and Michael Brady combining to throw 2 perfect innings with one strikeout.
The series finale will be held tonight at 7:05 when the Jammers will be trying to salvage a win before coming back home to face Brooklyn for a 4:05 start time on Sunday.
