Westfield man in Florida crash dies

By S. ALEXANDER GEROULD Special to the OBSERVER
POSTED: March 9, 2010
Donald Nash, 77, a Westfield resident who was injured in a bus accident near Lake Placid, Fla., has died. While it couldn’t be confirmed if Nash had died due to complications from injuries sustained in the accident, Village of Westfield Mayor Dave Carr, a close friend of the three couples who were involved in the accident, said Nash had been moved to another hospital and put on a respirator before his body gave out on Saturday. Nash and his wife, Judy, were traveling with Westfield residents Don and Marion Eno and former Westfield residents Dr. Robert Horsch and his wife, Joan, when a car failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the tour bus in which the couples were riding. Mrs. Horsch died as a result of the accident, while the others were taken to area hospitals with different injuries. Carr said Nash’s wife, Judy, was coping with the death and a funeral will be held once she returns home. “You can’t believe these things,” a stunned Carr said on Monday. “Our kids grew up together. They did things together. We did things together. We’ve just known them forever.” Nash, a retired pharmacist, was co-owner of Kingans Pharmacy in Westfield and also served on the Town of Westfield Board and in other organizations. “Don was an outstanding town board member and was fair, well informed, interested and involved,” said Martha Bills, Town of Westfield supervisor. “He possessed such a wealth of information, a way with words and an ability to get to the heart of the matter with any issue no matter how complex. He was a tremendous help to me when I became town supervisor. We were very fortunate to have someone of his caliber serving our town in so many ways over the years. Don was a true gentleman and an outstanding member of our community. We will miss him very much.” Carr said Nash would be greatly missed. “He would help anybody,” Carr said. “He was the most congenial guy you would ever want to meet. He’s going to be missed by the community.” The Mason Funeral Home in Westfield is handling funeral arrangements for Nash. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but will be announced when more information becomes available.
