DAYTON — Dayton Town Justice Jeffrey Beightol performed the swearing in ceremony of the Town officials at Tuesday’s town meeting in Dayton. Among those sworn in were Town Clerk Ruth Bennett, Councilmen Edward Lulas and Joseph Shull, and Highway Superintendent Brian Taber, who were re-elected to their respective positions. The newly elected officials who were sworn in included Town Supervisor Elect Mark Smith and Councilman Elect Kenneth Volk. Exiting Town Supervisor Tom Chupa took a moment to say some parting words. “I just want to thank everybody in the Town, and especially the board members and the planning board and Ruth for eight good years.” Councilwoman Jeanne Matteson presented Chupa with a certificate as she expressed her appreciation for his time and dedication. “Thank you so much Tom, for your service to the Town.” Earlier in the meeting, the board accepted Matteson’s resignation effective Dec. 31. The board will have to appoint someone to fill the open position. As Smith prepares to step into the role of Town Supervisor next month, he submitted his resignation from the position of Planning Board Chairman. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served on the board for the last 28 years,” he said. Cattaraugus County Legislator Crystal Abers updated the board and residents on some flood-related issues. “2009 has proven to be a very interesting year with this flood,” she said. She went on to express her appreciation for Taber’s efforts immediately following the flood. “I wanted to commend Brian (Taber). He was at Gowanda at our EOC (Emergency Operations Center) a lot of those days that first week, which was very important so the Town was able to be reimbursed for the damages that you sustained.” Abers said FEMA will move back into the County Building in Little Valley later this month in efforts to tie up loose ends. Next, she announced her resignation from the position of legislator. “I have accepted an appointment as Director of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism with the County,” she said. “I look forward to working with everyone here and I appreciate your support in the last 10 years.” The next meeting of the Dayton Town Board will be on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
