League Of Women Voters To Discuss Centralization Of School Districts

POSTED: December 4, 2009

What happens when two school districts centralize will be the topic of a special panel discussion being moderated by the League of Women Voters scheduled for Monday at the Fredonia Opera House from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The moderated panel discussion has been designed to provide area residents with vital information regarding school centralization from individuals who have experienced centralization of their school districts. The panelists have been invited to offer their opinions and insights concerning the creation of a new school district by centralization referendum.

The panelists include: Beth Meder Starks, a former student of Mayville Central School; Jay Baker, former Chautauqua Central School board member elected to the Chautauqua Lake board, now serving as its president; Jill Scott, Chautauqua Lake board member who ran for the Board of Education after centralization and who is still a board member; Debbie Madar, former Mayville and Chautauqua Lake teacher; Randy Henderson, a former member of the Mayville Board of Education who served on the Chautauqua Lake Board of Education; and Robert Guiffreda, Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES superintendent and local representative of the New York State Commissioner of Education.

The discussion has been designed to provide a forum for questions concerning school centralization to be addressed.

Marcia Merrins will facilitate the discussion and allow specific questions from audience members to be addressed. Ms. Merrins serves on the National Board of Directors for the League of Women Voters and has held the state chapter presidency, as well as having served as president of the local chapter of the League of Women Voters.
