Samuel J. Nicosia, 88, of 20 Hilldale Ave., passed away peacefully at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday (November 24, 2009) in his home.
A lifelong area resident he was born February 3, 1921, a son of the late Anthony and Antoinette Ferrara Nicosia.
He had attended the Jamestown Public Schools and was a 1950 graduate of Jamestown Business College.
Samuel was a proud member of the greatest generation serving in the U.S. Army during World War II from October 17, 1939, to July 14, 1945. During his tour of duty he had received the American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and two purple hearts.
Prior to his retirement on May 3, 1986, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 26 years. In earlier years he was a sales correspondent for the former Art Metal Corporation for 10 years.
He was a communicant of the Holy Apostles Parish at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Lakewood Memorial Post 1286 American Legion, the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, the American Postal Workers Union and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who was very devoted to his family.
Surviving are his wife the former Margaret M. Panebianco, whom he married August 30, 1947, three daughters: Ann (Dr. James) Burk of Pultneyville, N.Y., Cynthia (Richard) Johnson of Encinitas, Calif., Mary Ellen (Dr. Gerald) Carlo of Williamsville, N.Y., and six grandchildren: Ryan Burk of Chicago, Ill., Megan Johnson Carvolth of San Francisco, Calif., Andrew Johnson and Loren Johnson of Encinitas, Calif., and Andrew Carlo and Jennifer Carlo, both of Williamsville, N.Y.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Josephine Cusimano, Catherine Cusimano and Phyllis LaMarca, and a brother, Philip Nicosia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Apostles Parish at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 1:45 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
