CHARLOTTE - Harold A. Smith, 82, of Charlotte Center, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, in his home.
Born Oct. 11, 1927, in Cherry Creek, son of the late Neal and Alta Chase Smith. A Chautauqua County resident all of his life, he was a 1944 graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central School. He was a World War II veteran serving with the U. S. Air Force.
He operated a dairy farm with his brother, Richard and was also employed for more than 25 years at the former Peterson's Agway of Sinclairville.
Harold served as town of Charlotte councilman for 16 years and was instrumental in establishing the Charlotte Park, pavilion and tennis courts along with other various projects and later served on the zoning committee.
He was a life member of the Sinclairville Volunteer Fire Department, member of the Charlotte Center United Methodist Church and had served as treasurer for many years.
He loved to fish and spend time with friends and family at his cottage on Chautauqua Lake.
Husband of 53 years to Thelma Edson Smith, whom he married July 14, 1956; father of Keith A. Smith of Charlotte Center, Rhonda (Oliver) Berman of Allegany; grandfather of Katie M. and Chelsie R. Smith; brother of Helen Neckers of Corey, Pa., and Richard (Ainsley) Smith of Sinclairville. Also survived by nieces and nephews.
Funeral service 1 p.m. Sunday in Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. Visitation 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Burial in Charlotte Center Cemetery.
