People’s Law School To Be Held Tuesday

POSTED: November 23, 2009

The Peoples Law School will present a seminar on Intellectual Property Law Basics from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday addressing a number of patent, trademark and copyright law issues critical to established businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs. The seminar will also touch on related issues such as music downloads, and web site content.

Faculty presenters for this seminar are Byron A. Bilicki and Carl A. Hjort of the Bilicki Law Firm P.C. of Jamestown.

"This important seminar will provide attendees with a working knowledge of patent, trademark and copyright law fundamentals covering rights, fair use, infringements and defenses,'' said Theo Collins, spokesman for The Peoples Law School. "The focus on music downloads, web site content and other internet copyright issues should be of great interest to people currently in business or planning an enterprise featuring a web site as well as people involved in music downloads. This is the first time The Peoples Law School has offered this topic. We are hoping that some people in the business community will take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about patent, trademark and copyright laws".

The seminar is available to the public at four locations using Distance Learning Technology in partnership with Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES, Jamestown High School, Dunkirk High School, Chautauqua Lake High School and Olean BOCES.

"The E2CCB Distance Learning network that will enable attendees at each site to participate in the same presentations and interact with local attorneys who will lead the discussions, provide written materials and explain how and when patent and copyright laws apply and how to avoid costly legal entanglements,'' Collins said.

The Peoples Law School is modeled after a similar program sponsored by the New York State Bar Association to educate the general public on laws that impact directly on the average citizen.

Peoples Law School seminars are made possible by a partnership between Erie-2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES, the Robert H. Jackson Inn of Court and attorneys from the Jamestown, Northern Chautauqua and Cattaraugus bar associations who receive no compensation for their involvement and who present lectures as a public service. The Peoples Law School is sponsored by The Robert H. Jackson Center American Inns of Court the membership of which consists of judges and attorneys from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties.

Because space is limited to 25 people at each site, pre-registration is requested. To register, call Sally Horton at the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Adult & Community Education division toll-free at (800) 228-1184, ext. 4060, or call 484-1010 for the Jamestown and Mayville sites, 679-0404 for the Dunkirk site and 373-1600 for the Olean site.

There is no cost for those who call to pre-register, but there will be a $5 charge to those who register at the door the night of the seminar.
