PANAMA - Shoppers have a new reason this year to visit Panama during the holiday season.

The Panama Antiques Christmas Shop has opened for the holiday season, featuring several seasonal essentials like quilts, candles, wreaths and ornaments.

Courtney Reardon, Panama Antiques Christmas Shop owner, said this is the first time she has gone with a seasonal theme for her business.

''I'm experimenting with this. Panama needs something else to draw people. Maybe this will be it,'' she said.

Ms. Reardon said if her experiment pays off she plans to continue with seasonal themes throughout the year.

''That is what I would like to do,'' she said. ''So far people have been enjoying, looking around at the items from the Christmas wreaths and swag to the floral arrangements. Hopefully it will pick up more as it gets closer to Christmas.''

Ms. Reardon said she has created several varieties of floral arrangements for the holiday season and Christmas tree ornaments as well. The store also features other items from rugs to quilts to candles she has purchased from Amish crafters in the Panama area.

''People like the Amish-made items, especially travelers from out of the area that can't find Amish-crafted items where they live,'' she said. ''I go into the Amish community looking for home made items.''

Ms. Reardon said she even had one Amish women contact her about items she may want to display in her store, which is located at 7 W. Main St., Panama.

''They like it when I go to them. One women actually sent me a letter saying she has items that I might like to have in my store,'' she said.

Ms. Reardon said homemade and crafted items don't stop with the Amish.

She said a Brocton woman even makes her homemade salsa to sell for the holiday season.

To celebrate the Christmas themed shop, Ms. Reardon will be holding an open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5.

''We will have refreshment and drawings for wreaths and swag,'' she said.

The store is open from noon to 5 p.m. seven days a week, except on Wednesday when the business stays open until 7 p.m.
