In Years Past

POSTED: November 20, 2009

In 1909, the Journal was presenting a portion of a paper on chivalry written by A.D. Hiles. Mr. Hiles discussed in a masterly manner the position of women in the life of the day and asked what conception of the sacredness of marriage was to be held by the girl of 12 years who would sing: "I Love My Wife But Oh You Kid." The article should be read by every man or woman, young or old.

A sensational runaway occurred on Main Street in Jamestown when the horse attached to Hubbard and Gardner's grocery wagon, driven by Ross VandeWarker, ran down the hill. Mr. VandeWarker hung on gamely but at the corner of Main and First streets the rig collided with a meat market wagon driven by Oscar Lindahl. The occupants of both rigs were thrown to the pavement but escaped without serious injury.

In 1959, the Pennsylvania Gas Company announced it would build a customer service center and pipe yard in the Town of Kiantone, near the junction of Foote Avenue Extension, Peck Settlement and Kiantone Roads. The structure, a modern one-story buff brick and block building, would replace two older tile buildings and a frame structure at 812 Clinton St., Jamestown.

A 25-year-old U.S. Air Force Reserve sergeant was killed when he was pinned behind the steering wheel of his car, after it collided head on with a tractor-trailer on Route 17, just east of the Country Food Market in Levant. Police said the victim, Roland Bertram Whitney, of East Elmwood Avenue, Falconer, apparently fell asleep at the wheel. The truck driver, Thomas Barker, Jr. 36, of Canton, Ohio, was not hurt. Mr. Whitney was the 36th motor vehicle fatality to date in Chautauqua County and the sixth in the month of November.

In 1984, medical care might have to be rationed unless the high cost of unnecessary hospital visits was sharply reduced, witnesses had told a Senate subcommittee. "The process has already progressed to the point that there are some who do not receive basic and well established health services, such as immunizations and prenatal care, while there is widespread over-utilization of health services by other segments of the population, and in some geographic areas," said Dr. John P. Bunker, a Stanford University researcher.

A public hearing on a local law establishing a new retirement-incentive plan for city employees was set for Dec. 3 in Jamestown City Council chambers in the Municipal Building. Council members approved the local law and 11 other resolutions during a session which lasted only 16 minutes. The new retirement system was designed to give city employees an additional three years' employment credit if they chose to retire between Jan. 2 and April 1, 1985. City officials predicted the retirements would result in savings by reducing the payroll.

In 1999, a collapsed roof and piles of smoldering, twisted debris were all that remained of a warehouse in Westfield after a fire the previous day. Flames were shooting out of the building on Clark Street rented by Rick Raynor, owner of Raynor Construction. No one was injured in the blaze. The mostly cinderblock structure was part of a series of warehouses continued under one roof and owned by Bob Kneer of Westfield, whose car business, Classic Chassis, was also extensively damaged.

Two teams would be representing the area in the state football championship games the following week. After both teams won in Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, Salamanca and Clymer would be playing for the state title in their class. Clymer knocked off Hamilton in Class D, 28-20, and Salamanca defeated Delhi, 16-12 in Class C.
