Helen A. Smith, 69, of 4790 Route 474, Ashville, NY, died unexpectedly at 12:30 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 14, 2009) in the emergency room of WCA Hospital.
A lifelong area resident, she was born March 30, 1940, in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Walter and Betty Bock Brandquist.
She had been employed as a pharmacy aide for Rite Aid Drug Store and formerly Grey's Drug Store. In earlier years, she had worked as a receptionist for Union Optical and also was an assistant manager for the former Fanny Farmer Candy Store.
She will be remembered as one who loved to do crafts including knitting and crocheting. She attended many craft shows and made several craft items for her family.
Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia (Allen) Harle of Ashville; a son, Arthur Crossley of Georgia; a step-son, James M. (Laura) Smith Jr. of Lakewood; her grandchildren, Michelle (Joseph) Neubauer of McGuire Air Force Base, N.J.; Michael Royce of Florida; Tasha Royce of Binghamton, N.Y.; Amanda Crossley of Falconer; Seth, James and Angela Crossley of Georgia; Nicole, Natasha, Aaron and Ty Smith all of Lakewood; her great-grandchildren, Katlyn and Lindsey Neubauer; Kaylee Royce; James and Aubree Huckleberry; and Colton Myers; her brother, Walter Brandquist Jr. of Omaha, Neb.; her sisters, Ann Gleason of Pinellas Park, Fla.; and Ilene Himes of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Cathy Basile of Hospice Chautauqua County will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Blockville Union Cemetery. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Buffalo, N.Y.
