Cancer Services Program Holds Recognition Event

Christine Schuyler, Chautauqua County public health director, and Angela Swartzman, cancer services program coordinator, presented awards to supporters of the Cancer Services Program at an annual recognition event.
The annual event pays tribute to individuals who have distinguished themselves by providing exemplary service during the past year. The ceremony included a presentation from Delia Joslyn, community program coordinator for Susan G. Komen for the Cure WNY and Melissa Lyon, senior planner for the Chautauqua County Health Department.
The event was held at the Sheldon House on Falconer Street in Jamestown. The main feature of the evening was the presentation of the program's awards. Four awards presented, the first being the Community Leaders award to Family Health Medical Services. This award is to recognize the high level of service and enhancing quality of life for cancer patients in our community.
Mike Porpiglia of the American Cancer Society was awarded the Commitment to Serve award for demonstrating a strong commitment to improving the continuum of cancer care and outcomes for the residents of Chautauqua County. Two recipients were awarded the Outstanding Healthcare Professional award, Emily Sard-Johnson, WHNP and Lorie Lashbrook, MD of Westfield Family Physicians.
This award recognizes and honors a health care professional who reflects the high ideals of the profession, enhances public and professional awareness, knowledge, and utilization of evidence-based practice, and is dedicated to increasing the availability of the best cancer care to all Chautauqua County residents.
The Cancer Services Program of Chautauqua County oversees the delivery of comprehensive breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening services and prostate cancer education to underserved populations in New York. In addition the program provides public and health care provider education regarding cancer prevention and early detection. It also maintains a quality improvement program to ensure the quality of clinical services provided through the program and provides funds for community-based cancer support services for persons with cancer and their families.
