In 1984, Gov. Mario Cuomo said he wasn't thinking seriously about running for president in 1988, but refused to flatly rule out seeking the Democratic presidential nomination. In addition, the governor said that in the wake of Democrat Walter Mondale's overwhelming loss to President Reagan in Tuesday's presidential election, "Democrats, if they wish to win nationally, will have to lay out more clearly their reasons for wanting to make government more compassionate." The 52-year-old Cuomo was propelled into the national limelight by his rousing keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in July. Speculation about Cuomo's plans intensified in the wake of Mondale's defeat. As the governor walked into a crowded room election night at Democratic vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro's hotel in New York City, hundreds of Democrats began chanting: "Eighty-eight! Eighty-eight!," as a way of urging him on for the next presidential election.
A Jamestown furniture store founded in 1904 had changed names and owners. The business, long known as Field & Wright Co. at 100 N. Main St., would become Flanigan's after its purchase by a Rochester-based retail furniture chain. The Rochester-based chain was founded in 1910 as a small neighborhood furniture store. It had grown to become a nationally recognized retailer in the home furnishings industry. The opening of the Jamestown showroom would mark the 11th addition to the Flanigan's chain of furniture outlets.

In 1999, when vandals damaged a dry fire hydrant at the Firefighter's Park on Lawson Road for the second time in a month, Busti Fire Chief Roger Hall said, "I don't mean to get on my soapbox, but I'm sorry, I'm mad. And we're going to find out who is doing this. This is very serious and it has to stop," he said. Three weeks ago, vandals removed the hydrant's floatable cap and threw it into a pond. On Nov. 4, when volunteer firefighters checked the hydrant, they found it was completely filled with rocks. The hydrant, one of dozens around the county, sat adjacent to a man-made pond. It was used to siphon water to fill fire trucks in remote areas in fire emergencies.
Celebrating nearly a century of musical significance and sacred service, the pipe organ at Ss. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church would be recommitted on Friday as Jared Jacobsen, Chautauqua Institution organist, would present the Rededication Recital. Spanning more than 90 years, the instrument began as a small mechanical action Felgemacher pipe organ with manually pumped bellows. In 1967, a new Tellers console, several additional ranks of pipes and electrically powered wind in the pipe chambers enhanced the original organ. Jacobsen, a native of western Pennsylvania living in San Diego, would return to Jamestown for the historic event.
