Jane Elizabeth ‘‘Betty’’ Sheldon

Jane Elizabeth ''Betty'' Sheldon, 92, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at home, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Betty was born in Rochester, N.Y. in 1917, to Paul and Alice Crystal Jungjohann.

Betty graduated from Charlotte High School, Rochester N.Y., in 1936, attended Rochester Business College, Butler Community College, Beaver Falls Community College and La Roche Junior College, all in Pennsylvania.

Betty developed an early love of community service. She served the Rotary Sunshine Camp for handicapped children in Rochester, N.Y., Epworth Methodist Church Service Guild, and was a member of the vestry of St. Thomas in the Fields Church in Gibsonia, Pa. She helped found and became a director of the Jamestown General Hospital Auxiliary. Betty was active in real estate in Gibsonia before returning to the Jamestown, N.Y. area, where she was an agent with Dawson Realtors and later owner of The Green Farm in Lakewood, N.Y. She also owned and operated Sheldon Hall Bed and Breakfast in Greenhurst, N.Y.

Mrs. Sheldon was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Moon Brook Country Club, Pittsburgh Athletic Association, Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club, Coral Ridge Yacht Club, Chautauqua Lake Association, Chautauqua Institution Bestor Society and was a Paul Harris Fellow (The Rotary Foundation). She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of the Scottish Rite Consistory and the Jamestown Garden Club. Betty served in leadership roles in a number of community organizations, including as past president and director emeritus of the Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation, trustee and past board member of the YMCA of Jamestown, trustee of Jamestown Community College Foundation, past director of WCA Hospital, The WCA Hospital Foundation, WCA Services Corporation, and co-founder and member of the board of Starflight Medevac. She was also past president and director of the Lakewood (NY) Women's Club, and a past director of the Warner Home.

She is preceded in death by husband of 31 years, Phillip D. Yates; husband of seven years, Ralph C. Sheldon Jr.; brother, Paul Parker Jungjohann; and a sister, Margaret Marie Jungjohann.

Betty is survived by 10 children: Phillip D. Yates Jr. (Mary Anne Harp) of Lakewood, N.Y., Leigh T. Yates (Sharon Lisciandro) of Lakewood, N.Y., P. Christian Yates (Penelope Hutton) of Jamestown, N.Y., Jane Y. Gram (Fritz) of Cuba, N.Y., Martha E. Yates of Lakewood, N.Y., Linda K. Yates (James C. Hanks II) of Greenhurst, N.Y., Bettina Y. Wilkinson (James) of Valencia, Pa.,, George E. Yates (Elizabeth McEnroe) of Virginia Beach, Va., Nancy Y. Cala (Philip) of Greenhurst, N.Y., and Robert E. Yates (Rene) of Ashville, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren: Phillip D. Yates III (Sadie) of Buena Park, Calif., John C. Yates (Katy) of Reunion, Colo., Leigh T. Yates Jr. (Donna) of Dandridge, Tenn., Elizabeth Y. Lingenfelter (Tom) of Bemus Point, N.Y., Laura Alice Pageau (Scott) of Jacksonville, Fla., Lillian Matilda McNally (Shane) of Marion, N.Y., P. Christian Yates Jr. (Betsy) of Tempe, Ariz., Mark C. Yates (Michaela Johnson) of Bluffton, S.C., Andrew S. Yates (Pamela Tallon) of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, Michael Bradshaw of Minneapolis, Minn., Brooke Bradshaw (Bradley Jacula) of Redmond, Wash., Ryan Bradshaw (Shanna) of Kure Beach, N.C,, Marc Sturtz of Lakewood, N.Y., James J. Wilkinson (Lynette) of Baden, Pa., Emily Jane Baldauf (Shawn) of Evans City, Pa., Sarah Sheldon Yates of Englewood, Colo., Robert Edward Yates II of Richmond, Va., Alexander Philip Cala, Rachel Jane Cala and Peter Gianni Cala of Greenhurst, N.Y., Jessica Callahan of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 18 great-grandchildren: Melody Yates, McKenna, Brooklyn and Josiah Yates, Leigh Thomas Yates III, Max Elliot and Jack, Thomas Lingenfelter, Kristen Ashley and Kasey Danielle Pageau, Jacob Lawrence and Jessica Paige McNally, Soren Ray Yates, Sam Bradshaw, Brianna, Jimmy and Noah Wilkinson, Ota-vio Baldauf and Sage Varney.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the St. Luke's Ep-iscopal Church. The Rev. Eric M. Williams, rector, the Rev. Daniel W. Cook, pastor of Lakewood Baptist Church, and the Rev. Thomas A. Sweet, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home.
