This Is No Way To Repay Senior Citizens
To the Readers' Forum:
I am 43 years old and know that a great percentage of people in this area are senior citizens, but that is only one of the things Teresi should be looking at when he is thinking about cutting the budget for a senior citizen activity center. Many of these senior citizens paid their taxes over many years and deserve a place to go. This is the generation that went to war in World War 2 and Korea.
Does the mayor think because these people are old that they do not deserve any considerations? I was a Democrat, but after seeing all the problems from Teresi to Paterson, I am starting to re-think my party affiliation. It's a travesty that our current mayor would cut a program that has a minuscule budget compared to some of the other programs that cost millions of dollars.
I don't see Teresi winning the next election, but if that is what he is made of, then good riddance!

One of the reasons there are so many seniors is that many taxpayers have left...

When you want change, you have the power, its caled voting. But with no city elections and few county races to speak of residents had no real need to go to the polls and vote. so they get what they deserve. NOw that the "Pubs" are in charge let them governand show us what great leaders they are.

pbjlevan: Riverwalk = A certain few contractors that are relatives of or good friends with certain politicians will be paid VERY well by the taxpayers to do virtually useless work. Pretty much the same thing as the train station and many many other projects in the city.

I'm kinda curious what benefit to the economy the riverwalk project is. Can't we scrap that project until times get better? It really isn't bringing in any revenue is it? The train station renewal would have been a good idea about 20 years ago before it was stripped of it's interior but now they should just sell it to a private investor for maybe a restaurant or dance club. Something taxable.

I want to lower taxes AND I want UNFAIR services to be cut. See: welfare, bailouts, etc. But I agree with Monkey on the racist crap - there is no room for that. However I do believe that Obama's apparent "race" is what helped him win the election, and now he's going to have to deal with the other side of it.

Same problem as always. Everyone wants lower taxes but no one wants to lose any services whether it is the Westfield ER, the senior center, Fenton Museum, snowplowing, or police and firefighting services. Unfortunately, it has to be one way or the other. I also agree that it would be nice if qtadisi would stop making racial comments about Obama and Patterson and referring to Patterson's blindness. You may not like their politics but that kind of attack is really low and doesn't belong here, or anywhere for that matter.

After a while overused battle cries grow hollow and no longer raise everyone's hackles. People have grown tired of hearing "It's for the elderly", "It' for the children", "It' for your own good", “It’s to save the planet” and so on. Those excuses are used to support thousands of bad ideas, and as a result they don’t work any more no matter the reason.

It is true that tough decisions have to be made when the budget demands; however, the public needs to see each of the projects with a decerning eye and not with a soft heart. Though I agree that the seniors have earned a place in the budget, what are we willing to give up in its stead? The Fenton Museum, the Train Station, and several other historically significant projects consume taxes like water--but also provide jobs. Look closely at each project and objectively weigh the pros and cons--now which one(s) are you willing to scrap? More importantly, which are you willing to support?

I would say that qtadisi statement, "....brown bag of dodo in dc ..." is just a tad bitter and negative also, don't you think? Way to stay on subject there, qtadisi.

I agree, that perhaps cutting all of the senior citizens budget was not the right thing to do. Had he cut the same for after school programs, or fenton museum and the library, or any other programs, you would get those people complaining also. Tough decisions have to be made. No one wants taxes to go up, but they want the same level of services. Can't have both. RADCON, why are you so bitter and negative towards everyone and everything? Why don't you run for office, or come up with suggestions on issues? That would be to difficult I assume.
