Closing Westfield ER Will Cost Lives
To the Readers' Forum:
I would like to add some additional thoughts to the growing concerns about plans by state officials to downgrade Westfield Hospital's emergency are to an ''urgent care'' facility. There can be absolutely no doubt that this callous and arbitrary decision will cost the lives of some patients needing emergency care. It also will make it impossible for the brave and devoted members of our local fire departments to transport sick and injured to the emergency room. You will have to drive by car or pay for a private ambulance. Closing the emergency room will make our community much less attractive to anyone who might consideer moving to this area.
An urgent care facility is simply a medical office that is open when your regular doctor's office is closed. All patients requiring life savingemergency treatent will need to travel to Dunkirk, Jamestown or Erie.
I looked into this situation through my perspective as a veterinarian who provides emergency care to dogs and cats. A dog or cat from Wesfield needing emergency care would be able to reach over 15 difference veterinary hospitals faster than a Westfield human!
Another irony is that WMH's emergency department does not cost the state anything. Closing Westfield's Hospital emergency room will not save NYS any but it will also greatly increase the medical expenses of anyone who has an emergency.
Please join your fellow citizens in expressing concern and outrage at this terrible decision. We love our pets, but isn't it more important for people to get care in an emergency than dogs and cats? Please let the state know your feelings. See wmhsaveslives.org for instructions on how to register your opinion. Pleazse do it soon. Closing Westfield's emergency room could cost you your life.

If you think it's bad now, just wait until the Healthcare Reform goes into effect. Hospitals have been forced to do business the same as any other: Welcome to Walmart! The restrictions placed on "covered" care and the myriad of hoops required to obtain every cent owed has turned healthcare into just another business. Once the Federal Governmnt gets done we will be unable to keep most hospitals running without substantial losses. Both WCA and Westfield operate on primarily government funded insurance--Medicare and Medicaid: each dictating how much will be paid for a service. Once the gevernment got away with this, the private insurances got on board. A hospital and/or physician may bill whatever they wish, but they will only collect according to the service provided--as determined by the bean counters.

No one in Chautauqua County disagrees with you. It's just that the Chautauqua County government leadership doesn't have enough horsepower (no pun) to stop this lunatic Daines from shutting WMH down. Daines could give a rats behind about loss of life in Chautauqua County for the small cost savings that the state will possibly realize. God help him if he is ever in Western New York, has an accident on the Thruway and loses his life or one of his loved ones because of this insane government mandate.

If it wasn't for the Emergency Care at Westfield Memorial, my 20 year old Grand-son would not be alive today. What's wrong with our state officials. Must be they live somewhere else and have no votes at risk from this area. Just a lame Liberal move by our State. Maybe after the Gov. takes a good look at today's results of yesterdays votes around the country, he'll realize his party is in trouble.
