Dunkirk holds successful Fall Festival

Dunkirk’s School 4 was filled with students and their families attending the Fall Festival Family Fun Night.
From the smiles on all their faces, it was a big success, thanks to the participation of Dunkirk High School, JCC and SUNY Fredonia students who arranged the activities. There was face painting, pumpkin painting, games of skill and candy galore.
The event was arraigned by Century 21 coordinator Anna Fred, as part of an after school program designed to meet young students’ academic and social needs.
“I had no trouble getting the older students to participate in the program. The volunteers came to me, I didn’t have to go hunt them out,” she said.
Through Century 21, they gain community service experience, she added.
Dunkirk Police Officer Denise Zentz, who serves as the school’s resource officer, sat at a table greeting the students as they entered.
She had “contracts” outlining safe Halloween behavior the students and their parents were asked to sign.
With their signatures, they agreed to only go to homes that had lights on, to walk, not run, on sidewalks and not eat any candy until their parents had an opportunity to check their collection out.
Officer Zentz said she knew the youngsters and they knew her.
“We have a good relationship with each other,” she said.
School 4 Principal Joelle Vanegas said a total of 90 students and parents attended the Family Fun Night.
“This is the second year we have held this for our kindergarten through fifth grade students and we are very pleased with tonight’s turnout,” she said.
Fred said there will be events scheduled at the other Dunkirk Schools, throughout the year.
At the School 4 event, there were 27 Dunkirk High School and 18 SUNY Fredonia and JCC students participating.
