Albert Daniel ''Jack'' ''Popeye'' Hurst, 82, of Lexington, Tenn., passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at his home.
Jack was born May 6, 1927, in Ripley, N.Y., the son of Authur Hurst and Florence Waterman Hurst.
He attended school in the Sherman, N.Y. area. In April of 1945, Jack enlisted in the U. S. Navy, the fourth of five brothers to enter the Navy. He was trained as a rear gunner aboard a U.S. dive bomber aircraft. He was a 3rd class aviation mate, and was stationed in Guam, Siapan and in the Marinas Islands in the western pacific. Jack was honorably discharged from the Navy Nov. 7, 1947 as a 3rd class petty officer. He then returned home and worked in and around the area and in Erie, Pa. Jack was in partnership with his brother, Ken Hurst in the Thorp and Mann Feed Mill in South Dayton, N.Y., for a number of years and later worked as a tool and die maker for Ryan Machine Co and then he worked for Cummings Engine Corp. before retiring.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Della Per-fetto Hurst; two daughters: Julie (John) Szuamegale of Sheridan, N.Y., and Darcy Goodrich of Dunkirk, N.Y.; two step daughters: Cathy Johnson of Jackson, Tenn., and Grace Spencer of Pae-sons, Tenn.; three stepsons: Joseph (Terry) Cali of Ash-ville, N.Y., Ross (Vicki) and Sam Cali of James-town, N.Y.; 17 grandchil-dren; 21 great-grandchil-dren; one brother, Milton Hurst of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one sister, Hazel Halter (John Aldridge) of Sher-man, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Orrissa Hewitt and Vera Skinner; three brothers: Ken, Larry and Jim; and a nephew/brother, Ernest ''Tex'' Hewitt.
Jack will be sadly missed by all who knew him for his quick wit and ever lasting sense of humor. He enjoyed bowling, golf and research-ing ''The Hurst Family History.''
Services will be held at the convenience of the fam-ily. Burial will be in the Sherman Cemetery, Sher-man, N.Y.
