In Years Past

POSTED: October 30, 2009

In 1909, after a stormy session which lasted until midnight, a meeting at Hamilton, Mont. addressed by Dr. Frederick A. Cook adopted a resolution expressing confidence in the veracity of Barrill and Printz who made affidavit that Cook did not climb Mt. McKinley. Barrill, one of the guides who accompanied Cook declared they never reached the top. Cook replied that the statement was false. The resolution adopted by the assemblage sustained Barrill.

A. B. Richards, the district superintendent of the Postal Telegraph Company at Kansas City had issued an order that women must cut out rats in their hairdressing after Nov. 3. The general opinion was that he would find it difficult to enforce this ruling.

In 1959, an indication of Jamestown's first free mass polio inoculation clinic at the state armory could be seen in a long line of persons awaiting their turn at the afternoon session. Health authorities said that about 6,000 persons received Salk vaccine during the two sessions of the clinic made possible through cooperation of city and county agencies and a great number of volunteers.

For the second time within six months, the residents of Kennedy were uniting in an effort to assist the family of a child stricken with a grave and prolonged disease. Barbara Burkhart, 13, daughter of Benjamin and Dorothy Burkhart, suffered a second attack of rheumatic fever and had been a patient in Jamestown General Hospital for six weeks. Last May, the majority of Kennedy's 600 population organized the "Little Greg Amick Foundation" in order to raise funds to alleviate the Amick's financial obligations. Four-year-old Greg died May 10 after a courageous 13-week battle against cancer. Now these same residents were establishing the "Barbara Burkhart Fund" to be used in defraying her family's expenses.

In 1984, Bausch & Lomb Inc. was attempting to sell its Jamestown unit as part of an organizational rearrangement to emphasize its eye-care and health-care products divisions, according to Barbara Kelley, manager of corporate public relations in Rochester. The Acu Rite Measuring Products Division in Jamestown was to be sold along with three other units of the company in other parts of the United States and Canada.

Fire and rescue units and about 50 firefighters from the Falconer, Kennedy and Fluvanna volunteer fire departments were fighting a structure fire on East Main Street in Falconer shortly after 11 a.m. The fire may have started in a chair in the living room at 324 E. Main St., which was gutted, according to Falconer Fire Chief Glen Dickerson. The occupants escaped without injury.

In 1999, major phone companies were sending an unusual New Year's plea to their customers: Don't pick up that phone! They feared millions of people would check for a dial tone just after midnight on Jan. 1 to see whether their phone service survived the Y2K bug. Add them to all the folks who would ring in the New Year by calling family, and there was the potential for a telecommunications traffic jam.

An unoccupied two-story house on McKinley Avenue in Jamestown was heavily damaged by fire. The cause of the fire at 16 McKinley Ave. had not been determined, said Capt. Bill Johnston of the Jamestown Fire Department, who added that firefighters found a power line down when they arrived. Neighbors said the house had been vacant for years.
