Woman Charged After Teaching Child To Swear

POSTED: October 29, 2009

A Jamestown woman was charged early Wednesday after she was allegedly caught teaching a 20-month-old child to swear.

Around 2 a.m., Jamestown police were called to 15 Stowe Street for a noise complaint. As officers approached the house, they allegedly heard a female inside, 23-year-old Cora J. Douglas, repeatedly yelling a "vulgar phrase."

After a brief investigation, they learned that Douglas was allegedly attempting to teach the small child an obscenity.

She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and taken to the city jail where she was held in lieu of $600 bail. At arraignment in Jamestown City Court, the judge released her under the supervision of the Chautauqua County Probation department.

She is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 8 for a pre-trial conference.

Oh my - is this the first time this woman has been reported - if she was screaming at the child at that hour its good the police showed up - maybe in this instance they saved another child from being abused. If it is a law then it is what it is - there are many laws that were written ages ago on the books that can be enforced and arent - maybe this mother needs parenting classes

For all of those who believe this is not part of the law...get a Penal Law book...and you decide what constitutes what is and is not a crime. There are some VERY FINE lines. Also...for those of you who doubt she was "teaching" the child to say vulgar phrases: If you hear somebody saying "say ______, come on say ______" and then you see the only other person in the room is a 20 month old child, is that not teaching, or at least pushing them to say it?

one down 19 billion to go, hang the freak, about time someone does soemthing to stop these terrible parents, take them all off the the welfare role, and we'd have justice in the right ways. If it isn't a law, it should be. Parents today are the sole reason we are what we are today. Kids are so bad today, they are lying, stealing, killing, and doing alful terrible things, and it is no wonder why, Parents today are terrible. Everywhere I go, I see paretnts drinking, doing drugs and see no-one stopping it. If it takes this oone little step to start the process, I am all for it.

alright what this woman did was clearly wrong. illegal? you have got to be kidding me. is this article a joke? does jpd have nothing better to do with their time? something tells me this will be thrown out of court on several of any different grounds. first that comes to mind is the first amendment. i agree with cares2much on this one! land of the free? BULLSHIITT! land of laws, codes, legislature, etc. so more incompetent public servants can earn a living off of the rest of us. sometimes i understand why the rest of the world looks at us and laughs. the good 'ol u.s. of a., giving more morons a job since _______ (you enter the year, it could be any year).

We don't know the 'real' circumstances of this woman supposedly doing this but I don't doubt she was trying to 'teach' that child some vulgar language even though at that hour it seems a bit crazy. Even so purposely teaching the baby to say vulgar stuff is disgusting in itself and that child should not be returned to her. We all have sworn at some time or another with our kids, BUT, purposely 'TEACHING" them to say those things NOT!! I don't think so!!

God spare us from the morons that work at the police department and in the whold judicial system. I highly doubt this woman was trying to teach her child anything at 2 in the morning. She was probably screaming obscenities at the kid for being awake or crying or what ever. If they are going to arrest people for swearing in front of thier kids than most of us are in trouble. LAND OF THE FREE???? NOT ANY MORE!!!

They need to start charging women who are pregnant and smoke with the same thing.

JPD responded to a complaint and it sounds like they reacted reasonably to protect a child. We don't know what else they may have observed at the scene or if prior incidents have occured. The court and legal system will decide if the charge is appropriate.

Ok, enough is enough. If you are going to charge this woman with this "crime", even though I don’t agree with what she did, then you need to charge all others for the same crime.

What I mean by that is every parent that allows their child to watch TV programs and stations that contain such language that landed her in jail; not to mention an article in the local paper.

I truly believe that some people need to GET OVER THEMSELVS!!! I do NOT believe in censorship. Is the actual charge against this woman "teaching a child to swear" and actual law? I challenge the J.P.D to show the public the law, be it city, county, state or federal that this is an actual crime; not just “endangering the welfare of a child”.

Thank you for your attention.
