Margaret Sophie Pedersen Carlson, 94, of Heritage Green Nursing Home, Greenhurst, N.Y., went home to her Lord and Savior Friday, October 23, 2009, at 10:25 p.m. surrounded by loved ones.
Previously, Mrs. Carlson made her home in Frewsburg, N.Y. and later with her daughter, Connie Sherman, in Ashville, N.Y. In her early years, Margaret worked at National Worsted Mills. Later, she operated Hardly Able Dairy Farm with her husband and nurtured their six children.
Margaret was affectionately known as Granny, not only to her family, but to many friends.
An area resident all her life, she was born in Busti on November 27, 1914, the daughter of the late Christian and Dagmar Jensen Pedersen. Margaret was married to Martin Hugo Carlson for 53 years until his passing December 24, 1984.
She is survived by six children: Loraine (Floyd) Jett, of Sebastian, Fla., Richard (Maribelle) Carlson, of Frewsburg, Leland (Sharon) Carlson of Ashville, Roger (Yvonne) Carlson of Randolph, Constance Sherman of Ashville and Catherine (Bruce) Bucklin of Busti. She was Granny to 18 grandchil-dren: Linda (Larry) Pappas, David (Candy) Jett, Donna Jett, Mary (Dennis) Brink, Patty (Tim) Mead, Vicky (Fred) Zembardo Williams, Rick (Sue) Carlson, Mike (Debbi) Carlson, Pastor Lee (Michele) Carlson, Cherie (Stephen) Atkins, Christine (Randy) Jenkins, Melissa (Aaron) Gregory, Regina (Don) Carlson, Gerald (Tara) Carlson, Sheila (Dave) White, Julie (John) Covert, Michelle (Mike) Voty and Jeremy Bucklin. She was Granny to 44 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Margaret was also survived by a sister, Beatrice Pedersen of Panama and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by a sister Gladys Finch.
Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, Granny and friend. She was a long-time member of the Camp Street United Methodist Church, Jamestown, and was one of the founders and a lifetime member of the Stateline Draft Horse Club. Margaret was a member of the Red Hat Society at Heritage Park Nursing Home. She loved gardening and animals and had a pony, Neppa, for over 30 years. Margaret was an avid reader, often reading seven books a week. She loved watching her family participate in 4-H events, county fairs and horseshows. She enjoyed log skidding for which she won several blue ribbons. Granny bowled into her twilight years and participated in state and lo-cal tournaments. Family and friends knew Margaret best for her famous Swedish Pancakes and her love of pansies.
Pastor Mark Parsons will officiate the funeral service that will be held at Camp Street United Methodist Church, 110 Sanford Drive, Jamestown, N.Y., on Tues-day, October 27, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Busti Cemetery. Margaret's grandson, Pastor Lee Carl-son, will officiate the committal service.
The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday October 26, at the Peterson Funeral Home, 12 North Pearl Street, Frewsburg, N.Y.
Memorials may be made to the Camp Street United Methodist Church, or the Panama Fire Department Station II, 1002 Blockville-Watts Flat Road Panama, N.Y.
