JPD Patrol Foils Attempted Kidnapping

A Jamestown Police Department patrol at 6:40 a.m. Saturday foiled an attempted kidnapping on West Second Street, near Jefferson Street.
According to a police report, a Jamestown police sergeant was driving on West Second Street when he was stopped near Jefferson Street by a 21-year-old woman running toward the car screaming, "Help, help, he has a gun.''
The sergeant checked on the woman's well being and saw a man running west on West Second Street toward Steele Street.
The officer broadcast the man's description and direction of travel to other officers in the area.
An oncoming shift gave the Jamestown Police Department a few additional officers who could respond to the call, but county sheriff's deputies, Ellicott and Lakewood-Busti police officers and New York State troopers were all asked to help secure a perimeter in the wooded area between West Second Street and West Third Street from the Third Street Bridge to Jefferson Street.
All officers used extra caution since a handgun had been seen. The Jamestown Police Department's K-9 officer was also dispatched from his home to help search for the man and for evidence.
After a 10-minute search, perimeter units saw a man run north across West Third Street and up Monroe Street.
That man, Jeremy Quinlin Smathers, 24, of Winsor Street, was charged with second-degree kidnapping and taken to the Jamestown city jail.
After preliminary interviews, officers learned Smathers allegedly grabbed the woman near Washington and Second streets as she was walking to work. He kept her close by holding her arm and keeping a gun pointed at her side. For about 15 minutes, Smathers allegedly directed and redirected the woman in different directions until the woman saw the patrol car.
The Jamestown Fire Department and Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team were also called in to help with the investigation.
Smathers was taken to the Jamestown city jail and held awaiting arraignment.

If one were to read back at the earlier comments, it appears that friends/family of the accused were attempting some type of defense by generating reasonable doubt. This was attempted by bringing up the morales case, which apparently, Smathers has no involvement in. So yes, lets all stick to the facts.

For crying out loud! There is so much hostility on this site who could find out who's relative's have anybody's dog's sister's friend in their back yard?!! This Smather's guy did this crime-or he didn't. What's going on with everybody? Nasty people who don't own dictionaries?!

most of you people in here are discusting and need to grow up and get a life. im a family member of jeremy and no hes not inocent by any means, but you sure in the*****DON'T have all the PROPER FACTS. its time to break the STICH N ***** CLUB up here and maybe take a LQQK in your own back yeard before you go and judge others! get the FACTS before you have the nure to judge. WE'RE ALL ADULTS HERE, ACT LIKE IT!

I just read through the comments - has anyone else? It sounds as if many people are discussing many "different" topics! Smathers, Morales, Monica, etc. Is anybody on one page?

Our old DA didn't like to prosecute sex offenders. The office was very big on the "6 and 10" sentence - 6 months in jail and 10 years probation. It was awful. These scumbags would ruin a child for life and if they had a really crappy attorney, they MIGHT spend 6 months behind bars. I will give DA Foley credit - the sentencing, especially around plea bargains has vastly improved. Also, the length of sentence has NOTHING to do with the victim's credibility. Plea bargains are common so as not to retraumatize a victim by making them testify in front of their abuser.

Yea, 9 months doesn't seem like a lot for what he was convicted for. Just seems strange that he would revert to kidnapping. Sounds like he's had a lot of girlfriends, I guess none of them had any suspicions that he was dangerous, (if he did what he is accused of) I should add.

You're welcome newshound. I lived out west for many years because I do not like the laws here in NYS. I'm leaving again this weekend as a matter of fact. I guess it's not really as much as the laws here though. It's more a question of how they treat sexual offenders here. I DON'T CARE if this 13 year old girl was having sex with the whole town. NO MEANS NO! Why was this man walking the street after less than a year in jail? Even if the sex was consensual it was still illegal and should have been punishable by more than a year in the local jail. My step-son did 3 years in maximum security for stealing a car. In NYS that's a slap on the wrist and 3 years probation. NYS needs to punish these people. Not let them walk the streets to commit more crimes. You'd be amazed how 3 years in prison will change somebody...

Thank you oldwizard! This clears up much confusion. Yes, Smathers is a convicted sex offender. Why is he not on probation or some type of supervision? Why was he out at 6:00AM down by this place, if that is where the victim going? Does he know her? I'm trying to establish some type of connection. Usually, sex offenders go after the same type of victim. Big difference between 13 and 21. Dontcha Think?

That was a mistype. I meant to say she must have somesort of past that WOULD NOT make her a credible witness. There is obviously more to the story that we will never know. As for the intersection they are refering to. The Connection is at 2nd and Washington. Monica has not worked there in over a year. She wasn't even in Jamestown all summer, she didn't have her kids with her. Any abuse that took place by her was recent or old. The question I have to ask is... If Monica was such a bad mother, (I'm not saying she's mother of the year), why was only one child abused?

Jeremy Smathers is NOT INVOLVED with the Auston Morales case otherthan he had an alleged relationship with the child's mother. That has never been confirmed and as far as I know she has no children by him. NOBODY has been charged with anything concerning the death of the child. I know one of her baby daddy's and he has been granted temp custody of his child while the investigation continues. Everything you are reading is strickly accusations. The supposed sexual abuse, the beating and anything else has never been confirmed. The death has been ruled a homicide, it doesn't give a cause of death or motive. It's for the courts to decide and the jury pool gets tainted everyday somebody makes a new accusation. As for this Jeremy Smathers, I did find him on the state registry of sexual offenders. It doesn't give any history of the victim otherthan female and 13 years of age. He only spent 9 months in the county jail which means she must have been considered a good witness.

I didn't accuse anyone of anything!!! I don't now any of these people. I'm trying to find out who is who. All I'm asking is HOW SMATHERS IS INVOLVED WITH MORALES. Does anyone know? Other than dating Monica at one time, is he involved or are people just spreading rumors?

newshound: You're making us all very confused with your accusations. First off, Monica is the mother of Auston Morales. The father is "Junior". It has been rumored that Monica dated Jeremy Smathers, who in turn is listed on the list of pedophiles in the area. Whether or not the girl was 13, 16, or whatever age, it was still wrong, sick, and still got him in trouble. (As which it should have). Monica has no kids with Jeremy Smathers and I don't think anyone heard that Monica was the 21 year old taken. Monica is 20 years old, it was reported. Not 21. And what do you mean the place where the attempted kidnapping happened was the intersection that Monica worked? Are you implying that she is a prostitute?? Get your facts together before you accuse.

To start, for whoever is saying this Jermey Smathers did not have sex with the 13 year old girl neeeds to go get their facts straight. The registry states: Actual Sexual Contact and Immediately and physically overpowered Coercion. The dictionary decribes coercion as; the practice of forcing another party to behave in an involuntary manner by use of threats, intimidation, trickery, or some other form of pressure or force. The evidence speaks for itself. Your friend Jeremy is a rapist/child molester in the eyes of the law. He is a level 2 offender which means he is high risk of commiting the same crime over. We will never know what his intentions were with this young woman but it obviously wasn't good. Hopefully he'll do more than a year in Mayville for these crimes.

This is what I know. Smathers just got joint custody of his two kids, with Monica.(I think) Are you saying that Monica set Smathers up for the kidnapping? Also, my other question still goes unanswered. What does Smathers have to do with the Morales boys death?
