POSTED: October 23, 2009

On Oct. 12, 2008 the Jamestown Jets took the ice for the first time in team history and the opponent was the Wooster Oilers. That was the night the rivalry was born, it continues this weekend when the Oilers come to Jamestown for the first time this season.

The teams met a total of 10 times during the 2008-09 season. The Jets had the upper hand in the series with a record of 5-4-1 against Wooster and an impressive 4-2-0 record in Jamestown.

Last season the Jets were a high-powered offensive team and coasted to the Knox Cup Finals after easily winning the regular-season title while the Oilers were a good team that many felt underachieved. This season the roles are reversed.

The Oilers come into the game with a 9-1-0 record and have scored 97 goals, a league-high, in 10 games. The Jets meanwhile have battled a respectable 6-5-0 record after a 3-1-0 road trip.

The teams will play on Friday and Saturday night at 7:35 p.m.

Jamestown will have it work cut out for it this weekend. In their last four games the Oilers have scored double digits while shutting out their opponents. They are second in the league with a 30.2 percent power play and their penalty kill is a league best 94.3 percent. The Oilers have scored 19 power play goals in 10 games and have allowed only three power play goals against.

In order for the Jets to have a chance this weekend, they will need outstanding special teams and good goaltending.

Lorne Shotwell played his best game of the season last Sunday at Adirondack, making 50 saves in a 4-3 Jamestown victory. The win was the third of the season for Shotwell, who has 3-2-0 record with a 3.94 goals against average and .908 save percentage in six appearances.

The Jets have been riddled with injuries and are hoping to get back some of their key players this weekend. They have played without the services of their captain Rob Marlinski for a couple of weeks and they lost Justin Cubitt and Nate Hughes last weekend.

Despite the injuries the Jets have played well during their four game road trip. They swept the Findlay Grrrowl in Findlay, Ohio, and if not for a third-period collapse they would have swept the Adirondack Predators. Despite blowing a three-goal lead at Adirondack, they showed poise by bouncing back the following day with a victory.

This weekend is Kids Weekend with the Jets and each child gets in free per paid adult ticket.

Following the games fan will get a chance to skate with the Jets, so bring your skates.
