Marie E. Lamb

Marie E. Lamb, 91, formerly of 46 Coachlight Drive, Gerry, and Horton Road, Jamestown, died at 1:50 a.m. Monday (Oct. 19, 2009), in the Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.

An area resident for most of her life, she was born June 28, 1918, in Corry, Pa., a daughter of the late Elmer A. and Ethel J. Lindsey Vettenburg.

She was a 1936 graduate of Corry Area High School.

Prior to her retirement in 1980, she was employed for 16 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture with the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service. She began her career in 1942 working for the U.S. Government in the office of Scientific Research and Development in Washington, D.C. She had also worked for the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Library System for several years.

She was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church, the Mozart Club, and was a founding member of the Melodears, a singing group she managed while living at the Heritage Village Campus.

She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother and sister who was devoted to her family. She was a very fun loving person who had a great sense of humor. She loved to laugh and make people laugh while spending time with family and friends. She also loved to travel and spend time watching birds come and go from her bird feeder.

Surviving are seven daughters: Nancy Sennett of Seattle, Wash., Mable Haliburton of Nova Scotia, Canada; Lucille Phelps of St. Cloud, Fla., Irene Lynch of Jamestown, Linda Newhouse of Sterling Heights, Mich., Vivian Larson of Fredonia, and Rosalie Lamb of Oakland, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Arlene Canfield of Corry, Pa., and Donna Fox of Port Orange, Fla.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Lamb, whom she married Aug. 2, 1943, and who died June 13, 1993; her step-mother, Jennie Vettenburg; a brother, John Vettenburg; a sister, Maizie Vettenburg; and three grandsons, Jason Saulsgiver, Richard Phelps and David Oliver.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry McCann, pastor of the Hillcrest Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg, Pa.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
