Mary Jean (Hartmann) Monaco

WESTFIELD - Mary Jean (Hartmann) Monaco, 82, of 26 Cass St. Westfield, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at Absolut Care of Westfield, with her family by her side.

Jean was born on Jan. 13, 1927, in Wilkinsburg, Pa., the daughter of the late Phillip and Mary (Haas) Hartmann.

A Westfield area resident most all her adult life, Jean was a 1944 graduate of Mayville High School. She was a member of St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, and was a life member of the church's Altar and Rosary Society. In her younger years, Jean was very active in church activities and had been a religious education teacher and eucharistic minister. She was a dedicated homemaker whose main love was spending time with her family. She was proud of her community and had been active in several community activities and events. On Jan. 6, 1944, she married Joseph Monaco Sr. in St. James Major Church in Westfield. Mr. Monaco died on Dec. 7, 1986. Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She is survived by two daughters: Janice Russo of Westfield, N.Y., and Judith Izard of Traverse City, Mich.; and three sons: James Monaco of Bemus Point, N.Y, Joseph Monaco Jr. of Erie, Pa., and John Monaco of Fredonia, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren also survive. Jean is further survived by her sister, Marge Dikeman of Dewittville, N.Y.; and her brother, David Hartmann of Sinclairville, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Monaco Sr.; her brother, Phillip Hartmann; and her sisters: Betty Cupini, Liss Waterhouse and Sue Miller.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton St., Westfield, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church, 15 Union St., Westfield, with Father Marius J. Walter officiating. A Parish Rosary service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. Burial will be private in St. James Cemetery.
