Carl Timko is looking to re-open his funeral home

Larson-Timko Funeral Home, which served so many at its location on the corner of Temple and Central in the village of Fredonia, is looking to re-open its doors.
A public hearing will be held before the Zoning Board of Appeals of the Village of Fredonia on Oct. 13 to consider the application for a Use Variance by Carl Timko to operate a funeral home at 20 Central Ave.
“I’m in the process of relicensing the funeral home,” Timko said. “I’m applying at the state of New York Department of Health. The problem we have now is it was rezoned around 2001 when the funeral home was still operating.”
Timko explained how he has been waiting for a contract to expire, one he signed with a corporation, before he could re-open the funeral home.
“I sold out to a corporation. They approached me, and I was the first in New York to sign an intention of selling. I had two funeral homes at the time and I had a contract with a 10-year clause that I couldn’t go back in the business,” he explained. “I wanted to clear any thoughts that the closing of the funeral home on Eagle Street had any baring on my decision to open. I’ve been in the process all this time. I couldn’t compete. Now I’m in the process of reapplying myself, too.”
The corporation, Stewart Enterprises of New Orleans, sold its business to Brian Clinger. Clinger moved out of the home on 20 Central Ave. and reopened the business at the corner of Eagle Street and Route 60.
A few weeks ago, Clinger closed his doors.
Timko said he has spoken to Clinger and he wished him well.
“I am going to be very active and I have a goal now that I understand some of these things. I want the funeral home to be there for families as long as families have a need,” Timko said. “It has some real history.”
The building was previously owned by Mark Twain’s niece and was reportedly part of the Underground Railroad.
The public hearing will be held on Oct. 13, beginning at 6:15 p.m. in Conference Room II, second floor of Village Hall, Fredonia regarding the use variance.
