POSTED: August 6, 2009
PORTLAND — An investigation into a fight at a large underage drinking party that took place on July 16 on Wenborn Road in Portland has led to the arrests of three Dunkirk residents.
Michael D. Edwards III, 21, of South Jerboa Street was charged with second-degree assault and felony criminal mischief.
Joseph Jagoda, 20, of Washington Avenue was charged with felony criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
Paul D. Samuelson, 18, of Middle Road was charged with second-degree menacing.
Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputies said two Brocton girls invited a number of Dunkirk and Fredonia “guys” to the party where an argument occurred among them.
Officers said there were approximately 12 to 15 individuals on each side and a number of fights broke out between the two sides.
During the course of the fight, an unidentified 19-year-old Fredonia youth was hit in the head with a 2 by 4.
A vehicle belonging to another Fredonia resident was cut with knives and keys, kicked, a tail light broken and the antenna ripped off the vehicle.
The victim struck with the board was taken by private vehicle to Brooks Hospital and later was transferred to Erie County Medical Center where he was admitted. He sustained a number of facial injuries including a fractured skull and a concussion.
Officers said Edwards was charged with felony assault after he gave a statement admitting to it. He also was charged with felony criminal mischief on the vehicle.
Samuelson was charged with menacing when he admitted to pulling a knife and threatened to cut a number of people. Deputies have recovered the knife and the 2-foot-long wooden 2 by 4 used in the assault.
Jagoda was charged with felony criminal mischief for doing damage to the vehicle and with disorderly conduct for allegedly sucker punching the 19-year-old victim. Officers said this started the fight and Jagoda admitted to the fight.
All three defendants were arraigned in Portland Town Court and were released on their own recognizance.
