Norris M. Bentley

MAYVILLE - Norris M. Bentley, 92, of 40 Evans St., Mayville, died Saturday (Aug. 1, 2009) at Absolut Care of Westfield.

He was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Mayville, the son of the late George and Daisy Kenniston Bentley.

Norris was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946.

He owned and operated Bentley's Supermarket in Mayville with his wife for many years retiring in 1980. He had also been a bus driver for many years for Mayville Central School and had been a court crier for Chautauqua County for 10 years.

Norris was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mayville, a life member of William L. Travis American Legion in Mayville and of the Lake Chautau-qua Memorial Post VFW in Mayville, and he was also a member of the Westfield Moose, and was an exempt member of the Mayville Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Geege" Sylvester Bentley, whom he married April 25, 1946, in Mayville; one daughter, Joyce (Robert) Mathews of Mayville, two sons, John (Yvonne) Bentley of Mayville and Wayne Bentley of Jamestown; six grandchildren: Robert E. (Cynthia) Mathews of Columbia, S.C., Debra (Mike) Butler of Effingham, S.C., Lynne (Matthew) Schellinger of Columbia, S.C., Lisa (Kenny) Lee of Lexington, S.C., Julie (Jason) Ruch of Cherry Creek, N.Y., and Kelly Shaw of Columbia, S.C.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Dr. Gordon DeLaVars will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.

The Freay Funeral Home in Mayville is in charge of arrangements.
