Laurel Run edition coming
John D’Agostino
An eight-year OBSERVER tradition continues next week.
On Wednesday, our annual special edition to raise funds for The Resource Center and spotlight the Laurel Run will take to the streets. Volunteers will be at busy intersections throughout Dunkirk, Fredonia, Silver Creek, Gowanda, Brocton, Westfield and Forestville selling the $1 newspaper.
This year’s Laurel Run — the 13th edition — will take place Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18. The relay happens Friday, starting in Jamestown and ending in Dunkirk at City Hall. On Saturday, July 18, the runs and walk and a number of other events take place in Silver Creek.
Thanks to the community’s support, more than $1,800 was raised during last year’s sale. That was about $400 less than in 2007. However, last year’s sales were affected by heavy rains and showers that began at 6:30 and lasted through about 11 a.m.
“Any chance next year you might have a connection with Mother Nature?” asked Roberta Coniglio, who was the coordinator for the Fredonia group after the 2008 sales.
Even though it has been damp every day this week, early indications from forecasters are the rains may stay away for the sale this year.

With the Fourth of July one day away, many area residents will be flying our U.S. flag for the holiday.
For each flag that flies, there are different rules and etiquette. For residents who are displaying the Prisoner of War or Missing In Action flag, here is some information the OBSERVER has been asked to pass on in light of the holiday.
Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action come from every state, thus the POW/MIA flag has precedence over state flags. The following guidelines should be followed in flying the POW/MIA flag:
¯ If flying the flag from one pole, the POW/MIA is flown directly below the national colors.
¯ If flying the national POW/MIA flag and state flag from two poles, the POW/MIA flag should be flown from the same pole as the national colors and beneath the American flag with the state flag flying from the pole to the left.
