Area Women To Bring Back Easter Tradition

April 9, 2009
By Jack Berger

Women wearing hats in church on Sunday morning went out more than 40 years ago - when on Easter Bonnet Sunday, or any Sunday for that matter, one could look down from the balcony in their church and see a colorful blanket of hats resembling a fine patchwork quilt.

The women of the Randolph United Presbyterian Church have decided to go back in history and bring back the memories of women wearing hats in church. Yes, Easter Sunday will be one eventful and special Sunday when one can look down from the balcony in the church and really see that colorful patchwork quilt of hats.

Their cause is not one of ego but one of giving.

It works like this, if a husband brings his wife to this colorful event on Easter Sunday morning and she is not wearing a hat during the service her husband will receive hefty fine of $50 - it's rumored the women will settle for $10 - for the church's One Great Hour of Sharing mission. Realistically, men will be ask to donate $10 for this unusual Easter hat parade that will benefit the mission.

It is said that history repeats itself. Perhaps the Easter Sunday's hat parade in Randolph will show the congregation's younger set what the old days were like.

Two-year-old Anna Carlson could be thinking, ‘‘Those women can have their wild hats ... at my age, I’ll stick with the Easter Bunny.’’
