Charles T. Hallberg

Charles T. Hallberg, 86, of Heritage Village Campus, formerly of 5049 Maple Springs-Ellery Road, died at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, in the WCA Hospital.

A native of the town of Ellery, he was born Aug. 11, 1922, the son of Theo-dore C. and Nellie Chalfant Hallberg.

Mr. Hallberg was a 1940 graduate of Bemus Point High School and was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during World War II, as a radio operator on a B-17 in the 398th Bomb Group, 8th A F Division, and the Military Air Transport Ser-vice in North Africa from 1942 until his discharge in 1945. He also served dur-ing the Korean War from 1950 until his discharge in 1951 in the Military Air Transport Service.

He was employed at Firch's Baking Co. for 29 years, retiring in April of 1985. Following his retire-ment, he was employed in groundkeeping, specializ-ing in floral arrangements for Midway Park from 1985 until 2006.

Mr. Hallberg was a member of the Church of Christ, the Maple Springs Fire Department since 1952, the Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion and the 398th Bomb Group.

Surviving are his wife, M. Irene Stowell Hallberg, whom he married Sept. 10, 1941; two sons: Dennis C. (Karen) Hallberg of Love-land, Colo., and Larry D. (Ginny) Hallberg of Bemus Point; three grandchildren: Jennifer D. Hallberg of Tampa, Fla., Chad G. Hallberg of Bemus Point and Ashley M. (Kevin) McDowell of Mooresville, N.C.; a step-brother, Mil-lard O. Carlson of Rock-port, Maine and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hallberg was preced-ed in death by his mother, Nellie who died Nov. 9, 1930; his father, Theodore who died Oct. 6, 1957; his step-mother, Leola M. Hallberg who died No-vember 11, 1998; his two brothers: Clarence H. Hallberg who died Feb. 4, 1988 and Lester H. Hallberg who died July 11, 1995; and a great-gran-dson, Tyler Mitchell McDowell who died May 7, 2008.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Satur-day in the Bemus Point Un-ited Methodist Church. The Rev. Daniel G. McBride, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Bemus Point Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday in the Lind Fun-eral Home.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Ma-ple Springs Fire Depart-ment, P.O. Box D, Maple Springs, NY, 14756; the Church of Christ, 875 Fair-mount Ave., WE, James-town, NY, 14701; or a char-ity of choice.
