Marwood F. Smith

Marwood F. Smith, 88, of 11 Brookside Estates passed away at 6:10 a.m. Friday (Feb. 6, 2009) in Heritage Park Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center.

A lifelong area resident he was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Jamestown, the son of the late Walter and Lily Dominey Smith.

Marwood attended Falconer High School and was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. Prior to retirement he was employed at Jamestown Malleable Iron for more than 40 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Poland Senior Citizens and enjoyed working outdoors and in his gardens. He also enjoyed working with his tools and will be remembered as an all around handyman.

Surviving are his wife, Vera Overberg Smith, whom he married June 26, 1948, in the First Lutheran Church of Jamestown; two sons: Bruce Smith of Jamestown, Wayne Smith of Falconer; two daughters: Brenda (Skip) Frazier of Ellington, Nancy (Gary) Kavanaugh of Apopka, Fla.; a son-in-law, Brad Schuster of Westfield; 10 grandchildren: Jennifer (Jeff) Miller of Cherry Creek, Lisa (Chris) Swanson of Jamestown, Elizabeth (Clarence) Dickerson of Kennedy, Eric (Jamie) Frazier of Jamestown, Valerie (Jason) Giovannini of Pittsburg, Pa., Zachary Frazier of Ellington, Tammi Kavanaugh of Apopka, Fla., Mathew (Christina) Schuster of Portland, N.Y., Christopher Schuster, Lindsey (Gordon) Jaynes all of Westfield; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Schuster in 1998; two great grandchildren: Ryan Miller and Grace Dickerson; a brother, Theron C. Smith; and a sister, Selana A. Brown.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy J. Hoyer, pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Levant Cemetery.

Friends will be received by the family from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be donated to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Falconer Public Library or to Hospice of Chautauqua County.
