Salamanca Teacher Charged
Middle School Science Teacher Jailed Saturday After Incident With 14-Year-Old StudentBy Robert Rizzuto rrizzuto@post-journal.com
SALAMANCA - A Salamanca Middle School teacher is in jail after an investigation into a sexual relationship he allegedly had six years ago with a student who was 14 years old at the time.
Michael J. Dupont, a seventh grade science teacher from Salamanca, was taken into custody at his home at about 3 a.m. Saturday by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department.
He was charged with three counts of second-degree sodomy, based on alleged sexual interactions between him and a 14-year-old boy during April and May 2002.
Further charges are expected to be filed against Dupont, 42, through the indictment process, according to a news release from the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department. He was taken into custody, arraigned in Great Valley Town Court and sent to the Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
The Sheriff's Department, in a news release, said there is reason to believe there are several other victims who have not come forward and they are encouraging them to do so.
The Salamanca Board of Education held a special meeting on October 1, which except for six minutes at the beginning of the meeting, was held entirely in executive session, citing a personal matter.
There were members of law enforcement agencies present for about 30 minutes of the meeting, which lasted more than two hours, but details regarding what was discussed during the meeting have not been released.
Calls to Doug Hay, interim Salamanca district superintendent, and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff were not returned as of press time Saturday.
More information will be published in The Post Journal as it becomes available.
